True, the voltage fed to the coil is higher which results in higher voltage to the didtributor and spark plugs. As the engine revs up, the ignition event does not / cannot happen multiple times but just once or twice.the hardware just cannot charge/ discharge as fast which results one or two spark pluse(s). Because of the several pulses, the timing light flashes several times but the timing mark on the damper continues to move, hence the "erratic " timing. Does it matter which inductive pickup pin is connected to ground.Re a dial back timing light with regard to an MSD system.my understanding of what MSD means.Multiple Spark Discharge.because the system uses a large internal capacitor to furnish the spark energy to the coil (which in turn boosts the 400+ dc volts from the control box to feed the coil primary which boosts it 20,000 volts to the distributor), it can furnish several pulses in rapid succession. I took my meter and checked Ω like you noted. I got busy this weekend so I did not get around to asking. I picked up a Snap-On timing light at a Swap Meet for dirt cheap. Posted: Sat 8:32 am Post subject: Re: Old Sears timing light wiring The +12v pin has extremely high resistance to any of the other pins (basically off-scale on the meter) regardless of whether the trigger is pressed or not. I have two old Sears timing lights, models 161.2134 and 161.2137, and they both use the following connections:Īlso, measuring the pins with an ohmmeter, one of the inductive pickup pins is connected to ground inside the light, and the other has approximately 680 ohm resistance to ground. The '71 now has the 1835 engine, swapped from the '70. I will get the information you need later today.ġ970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. I have never really sought a different method but I really don't have a lot of experience doing this kind of stuff with the exception of maybe a few time a year.Īny recommendations on a good quality light that wont break the bank? I have always done static first then set the timing to 32 with the light after. Posted: Fri 9:27 pm Post subject: Re: Old Sears timing light wiring This allows you to set it to 32* and then use the TDC make and not need a degreed pulley. I didn't see just the cables, but i did see lights that use the same cables.īTW, you really want a light that allows you to "dial in" the advance. Posted: Fri 9:04 pm Post subject: Re: Old Sears timing light wiring I considered buying a new light but since I have the parts necessary to make my own leads I figured I would give it a shot, if it doesn't work out I will probably buy another. I did do a little searching on ebay but I could not find just the cables for my light.
